Samichlaus und Schmutzli

Samichlaus (Saint Nicolaus) and Schmutzli came to visit Anton and Lukas in the early evening. They came into the house and sat down in the living room with Anton and Lukas. They stayed for quite a while and talked with the kids about their lives in Switzerland and how Anton was doing in Kindergarten. Both Anton and Lukas responded in beautiful Swiss German.

Both boys were a bit timid; yet Lukas recited his poem and Samichlaus understood it clearly, Anton sang a very nice song. Then, the Samichlaus read from a list that he had received from Schmutzli. It turned out that Anton & Lukas did really well last year and a few things that they can still improve on. At the end, Schmutzli handed two bags with nuts, oranges, and mandarins, and chocolate to the boys.

If you look closely, you’ll see that Lukas didn’t want to be so close to Schmutzli:) I don’t blame him. He hesitated to sit near him and being a sympathetic mom, I picked him up and plopped him down anyways.

Hi Quynh…what does the Schmutzli represent?? If it’s what I think (evil) then I don’t blame poor Lukas for not wanting to sit next to him 😉
